For students who have done an online portfolio, or other non-'identity' themed web work

Please add two paragraphs either on your class blog or on your actual site about how your work ties into your notion of yourself, as a person, as a citizen, a student, etc.

How did you fin the theme of identity guiding you as you built your site?

This will help me to grade your assignments as per the central topic of the course - writing for the web with an emphasis upon the notion of identity and how it can be influenced by experience and culture.

Find ways to relate your output as a designer to your view of the world and how the world has shaped your idea of 'me'

For example, if your design work is influenced by a concern for the environment, explain how.

If your work reflects your thoughts on your a) cultural heritage, b) beliefs, c) influences etc.

What part of you do you feel your work best communicates?

Please post the link to your live site on your blog

Class,

Please post a link to your live site on your blog.

Even if your site is not 'ready' its important to publish it to see how it performs live.

REMEMBER:

Your inquiry should not be limited to an isolated self-analysis but should include, for example, broader community and national perspectives, and critical investigations of human relationships, the influences of cultural environment, and the impact of technology.

The process should take into consideration some of the following questions:

who are we as individuals?
who are we as citizens/part of a community?
how are identities constructed?
how are identities defined?
how are identities maintained?
how are identities stolen/lost?
what are we?
what does it mean to be human?
where do we draw the line between human and machine?

Central to notions of identity are these interrelated topics :
individual identity
cultural identity
virtual identity (ie non physical)
liquid identity (ie multiple identities - see A.R.Stone, 1996)
family and ethnicity
class
economics
religion
sexuality
spirituality
mass mediated identity
feminist issues
political identities

The aim of the assignment is to provide the opportunity for you as designers and creative writers to demonstrate the technical skills gained and theoretical concepts explored in the lab
workshops and independent commitment to the project.

It will be important to utilise the non-linear and interactive nature of the Internet and the World Wide Web to enhance your project. In addition you need to comprehensively document your
process: this should include a site map, flow chart of the navigation and related

Forms, Box Model (again), letter spacing, Pseudo-classes, 'hover'

HTML FORMS

http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_forms.asp

A form is an area that can contain form elements.

Form elements are elements that allow the user to enter information (like text fields, textarea fields, drop-down menus, radio buttons, checkboxes, etc.) in a form.

A form is defined with the
tag.

--------------------

The CSS Box Model

http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_boxmodel.asp

All HTML elements can be considered as boxes. In CSS, the term "box model" is used when talking about design and layout.

The CSS box model is essentially a box that wraps around HTML elements, and it consists of: margins, borders, padding, and the actual content.

-------------------------

CSS letter-spacing Property - it increases or decreases the space between characters in a text.

http://www.w3schools.com/css/pr_text_letter-spacing.asp

---------------------------

PSEUDO-CLASSES

CSS pseudo-classes are used to add special effects to some selectors.

http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_pseudo_classes.asp

-----------------------------

CSS :hover pseudo-class

http://www.w3schools.com/css/pr_pseudo_hover.asp

The :hover pseudo-class adds a special style to an element when you mouse over it. Active, visited, unvisited, or when you mouse over a link, can all be displayed in different ways.

A note on classroom participation - attendance, punctuality - staying until the end of class

Class,

I need to remind you that only four weeks remain until the 5th May deadline for the main LIQUID IDENTITY project.

I have been lenient with students leaving before the of class but I require students to remain in room 115 until 8.30 from now on.

You are of course free to come and go to get coffee, snacks etc, but please be mindful of the limited time that remains in which a focussed, dedicated lab has been made available for your exclusive use, with your instructor and peers there for assistance and advice.

Thanks.

Week 1

On Wednesday Jan 27, we'll pick up where we left off with the Jesse James Garret "Elements of User Experience" presentation, and we'll also review the key ideas in the second required reading "Web ReDesign 2.0: Workflow that Matters".

The Ex 1 assignment is due on Wed next week so we'll continue with the 'basic HTML' material started on Monday night. I'll aim to get more copies of this handout in time for the Wednesday class.

In the meantime, download or make some digital images to accompany your 'even number' based website (e.g. if you are doing a site about 'the four elements' find images for fire, water, earth, air etc).

We'll also look at audio editing software such as Audacity and how it can be used in combo with other programs to prepare compressed audio assets for digital delivery.

Don't forget to email Joshua Singer if you are wanting to 'add' to DAI527 -

jsinger@sfsu.edu

See you in class.

Hi, I'm your Instructor for DAI537

My name is David Cox and I'll be your instructor for DAI527 this Spring 2010 semester at SFSU DAI.

My background is in both motion picture production and videogame production. I live in the Mission district of San Francisco. I make films, write and play music. In addition to teaching DAI527 here at SFSU, I also teach at both the Mission Campus of City College of San Francisco (Game 100: Exploring Game Worlds and MMSP145: Storyboarding and Storytelling for Multimedia) and DeVry University Online in multimedia and videogame related courses.

My cultural background is British/Australian, and I have been a long term visitor to the Bay Area since the early 1990s, when I first met San Francisco film makers at a film festival in Europe.
